Participation Observation

For this project, I first watched the film, Whale Rider, about a Maori girl living in New Zealand.  After watching the film, I then pretended that I was an anthropologist visiting the characters in the film.  In this essay, I act as a participant observer and write about my observations.  This artifact demonstrates my creativity and ability to image myself in other cultures that are portrayed in literature and film.

Children's Literature in Film

In this artifact, I examine the children’s text Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and compare it to the film adaptation.  Many popular children’s books have been made into films and often in this process; the story is changed or enhanced.  In this essay, I discuss the differences between the film and the original story and also describe how I would use both ‘texts’ creatively in my classroom to teach various lessons, including how to make self to text connections and about dealing with strong emotions.  This project pushed my thinking and allowed me to incorporate media in my classroom in new ways.

Poetry Genre Project

For this project, I had the opportunity to choose a writing genre to explore.  I decided to challenge myself creatively to write poetry.  This artifact highlights three poems I wrote.  This project was enjoyable, yet challenging , and really forced me to think in a different way.  These three poems show that I can step outside of my comfort zone and channel my creativity in writing.
